FAQs

Who would benefit from your services?

I’ve worked with everyone from early-stage biotech startups that just incorporated to publicly traded entities with global operations. Specific analyses I’ve done previously are listed above, but in general if your organization needs extra help with competitive intelligence, data analysis or strategic planning, we may make a great team!

Whether your organization is large or small, nearly everyone would benefit from more in-depth market intelligence & analysis to put more data behind key development, investing and M&A decisions. Rapid competitive intelligence is a serious advantage, as it allows organizations to move much faster – they can vet the feasibility of ideas in days instead of weeks, and appropriately allocate precious resources to the right bets. No matter how early you may be, it’s always important to keep competition, future market dynamics and product positioning top-of-mind – this is where I can add a ton of value.

Why wouldn’t I just hire a full-time analyst?

Great question! The median annual salary for a full-time competitive intelligence / corporate development analyst is ~$150K / year, and that cost increases in high cost-of-living markets such as the Bay Area, Boston or NYC or for individuals with investment banking or investing experience. This excludes the additional costs of benefits, bonuses and equity.

Additionally, hiring has a lot of friction & indirect costs, such as your team’s time & focus. Lastly, while the value of quality competitive intelligence work is recognized to better inform development, investing and M&A decisions, most biotech companies don’t have enough work to justify a costly FTE. Thus, the analysis falls through the cracks or is partially shifted to adjacent roles, which now have to split time from where they should be focusing.

With a retainer plan, you can pause and resume your subscription as often as you need to ensure you’re only paying for quality competitive intelligence when you need it. Since I’ll already have the context of your organization, you’ll benefit from faster time-to-insight. I’ll also reserve time so that I can prioritize your organization’s work – you are always just one click away from getting started again. Compare that to the time & friction of onboarding a new consultant, determining availability and scoping a new project every time.

You’ll also be getting access to someone with 6+ years of experience across investment banking, private equity and biotech corporate development roles for a fraction of the cost of a FTE. Prior analyses I’ve posted on Twitter or LinkedIn have received millions of cumulative impressions and have been shared thousands of times across the industry. You can get a sense of some public work I’ve shared by checking out my Twitter or LinkedIn profiles.

Is there a limit to how many requests I can have in the retainer plan?

Nope! You can add as many requests as you’d like to your queue, and they will be delivered one-by-one.

How fast will I receive my work?

I’m committed to turning around your request as fast as possible. The exact timeline will depend on the complexity of the ask and will be communicated upfront. I’m always open to hopping on a call to discuss further.

Who is the analyst working on my requests?

I will! With this service, your work will not be outsourced at all – I’ll handle everything from scoping to delivery. I have years of experience as a life sciences analyst in investment banking, private equity and corporate development roles. I’ve worked at everything from large financial institutions to early-stage biotech startups. Currently, I am working on a NewCo.

How does the pause feature in the retainer plan work?

One of the key frictions with the traditional consultant or FTE model is that you may not have enough work to justify the cost. It could be that you only have one analysis you really want to get done now, and won’t have anything else for a few months. That’s where pausing your subscription is really useful.

By guaranteeing a minimum amount of hours every month, I can offer discounted rates & preferred availability to a select few clients. However, it could be that due to workflow, travel or other reasons, there isn’t any work in a particular month. Instead of letting that go to waste, you can simply pause billing and resume it once you have work again. This way, you get the full benefit of the pre-negotiated hours.

What resources do you use to complete analyses?

Depending on the task, I’ll use a mix of tools, including subscription databases, publicly available data and sell-side research. I can also leverage experts across my expansive network.

One of the advantages of working with me is that you can eschew paying for costly tools yourself, some of which are >$100K / year, but get the same level of quality.

How do I request an analysis?

When you subscribe, you’ll get access to a Trello board where you can upload all requests, manage your queue and see the current status. Requests can be submitted by uploading documents (i.e. a Google Doc), writing directly in Trello or even recording a Loom video. For complex tasks, you can schedule a call with me to discuss further.

What if I have comments or questions on the analysis?

Upon delivery, I’m available to answer any and all questions. I’ll continue to revise the analysis until you’re 100% satisfied. Revisions still accrue billable hours.

What if I only have a single request?

The retainer plan may still make sense for you! This is where you can pause your subscription and reactivate it once you have more work. However, for truly one-off asks, you can also book work at my hourly rate.

Are there any refunds if I don’t like the service?

Due to the nature & delivery of the work, there will be no refunds issued.
